Cars & Eligibility
Which cars are eligible?
Probably no other event attracts the eclectic mix of iconic cars you'll see on the Three Castles. Whether it's a VW Beetle or a Ferrari it's more than welcome just as long as it's in period.
Any classic car of a make and model made before 1st January 1991 is eligible for one or other Three Castles event and all of them are eilibible for the Three Castles Trial itself - no special modifications are needed, though for ease in following the roadbook and particularly in doing regularity sections, we do strongly recommend fitting a simple trip meter, such as an entry-level Brantz 2 or Brantz Retrotrip. These start at around £200. You can also fit the authentic period equipment, for a price.
Heritage & Classic categories
Each crew and car are placed with others of similar kind in an appropriate age category and class. Pre-1954 cars are in a category for Heritage cars. Post-1953 cars compete in the Classic categories, further divided into groups by age. The two categories run over the same route, with no difference in average speeds and test manoeuvres set and a car from either category can win. More experienced crews run early in each class to avoid baulking wherever possible.
Designed for classic cars
Roads are usually smooth, and we do not use unsurfaced test venues. The entire experience is tailored to suit cars from the 1920s to the 1980s and their owners. Each year, we refine it based on feedback from those crews.
Whether you choose the Classic or the Heritage category, the entry fee is the same. It includes a year of Three Castles Motor Club membership. If this will be your first rally, don't worry; we'll be happy to offer you advice all the way.
