Two crews were separated by just five seconds after two full days of rallying in glorious summer weather on this year’s Three Castles Trial. Although Dermot Carnegie and Paul Bosdet retained their overnight lead, by the close of a hard fought second day the determined Graham Walker and Sean Toohey had battled their way to within five seconds of retaking the lead. There’s all to play for on Friday’s eleven tests and three regularities.
Behind these two there’s an equally intense struggle for the final podium spot, now headed by Steve Farmer and John Gearing in their MGB GT V8, by just four seconds from Duncan Wild and Steve Skepper in their Mini Cooper S.
Lurking just behind these four, Peter Keel and Les McGuffog are waiting to pounce on any mistakes in their immaculate Dolomite Sprint, now just ahead of Nigel Perkins and Andrew Duerden’s Porsche 911.
On another sublime day the crew to suffer most were David & Melanie Roberts, whose Porsche 911 had clutch failure after a slight off on the Trawsfynydd Ranges test. This has left the hard fought Novice category lead to the Porsche 912 of Theo and John Wilson, which lies a creditable 13th overall.
Also in trouble were Tony and Piers Covill, who initially thought their Rolls Royce Silver Shadow’s drive failure terminal but were rescued by the ‘brilliant’ Brit Assist service crews as are now back in the event.
