A delighted Tony and Bella Covill took home the winners spoils (a rather large glass bowl) in the Inaugural Welsh Sporting Trial, after leaders on almost every test Colin and Alison Pattinson in their rapid MGB blotted their copybook with a single wrong test and a wrong approach to a passage check. Is this the first time a Rolls-Royce (seen here accelerating hard on the second of our two driving tests at Plas-n-Cefn, has won a rally?

All participants in the pilot group voted this an enjoyable way to tackle the Three Castles, and three entrants completed the whole Classic Trial route, with only Brendan O'Donoghue's Triumph TR6 falling prey to mechanical troubles. All encouraged others to try the new category.

You can now choose the Three Castles you would most enjoy from three categories, Classic, Sporting or Heritage. The new category is the Sporting Trial. Running over the whole Classic Trial route and enjoying the same halts while not competing over the regularities, this is the Three Castles for a more relaxed experience, in any eligible car made before 31.12.1981. Sporting Trial crews will still compete on the Driving Tests and will enjoy the same status as Classic Trial and Heritage Trial entries. There are separate awards for this section of the event, and it offers a whole new way to enjoy the Three Castles.

We will introduce the Sporting Trial category as part of the fifteenth anniversary Three Castles in 2018, and decided to run a small pilot group in 2016.

The all tests and road touring format also underpins the Three Castles Trophy we're running in 2017, so that will make an ideal introduction to the longer event.
